Inside Britney Spears’ Conservatorship Battle

Britney Spears is one of the highest-selling pop singers in American history, and for much of her three-decade career, she has not been in control of her life or her finances. After her very public mental breakdown in 2007, she was placed under a conservatorship, with her father in control of her finances. The “Toxic” and “Womanizer” singer was not opposed to being placed under the control of a conservatorship in 2008, but she did specify that she did not want her as the conservator.

12 years later, Jamie Spears is still in control of his daughter. Jamie was given the legal right to oversee and make decisions on behalf of Britney. This includes control over her finances, health, business deals, and personal life, which he managed up until 2019.

Conservatorships are put in place by family court lawyers in Ontario in situations where the conservatee is not well enough to make their own decisions. This kind of arrangement exists to protect the elderly or those with cognitive impairment from accidentally spending all their money. The average person that is placed under a conservatorship

This specific conservatorship manages Britney’s finances and personal decisions, which is a diversion from the average conservatorship. She cannot sign any contracts, as she has no legal autonomy, so her conservator signs them for her. This has caused concern among her fans because she has performed in public countless times over the past decade, and they worry that she is being forced to perform against her will.

Her father insists that this conservatorship is necessary, although her brother told Harper’s Bazaar that it’s no longer necessary and that Britney would prefer to gradually get her autonomy back.

It should also be noted that her conservatorship has control over her legal team, and her request to hire another lawyer for family issues to fight for her was attempted to be denied by her father. However, the request was approved, and she is going to appear in court this summer to tell the judge how she really feels. She did not request to show up to court in person; rather, her father’s legal team requested this.

As of right now, one thing is clear: Britney does not want her father as her conservator, and she would like to work towards having more legal autonomy. Britney’s previous request to remove her father as head of her conservatorship was denied, but there are still chances for her to re-request this motion in the future.

Britney and her long-term boyfriend have repeatedly thanked fans for their support. There is no doubt that any developments in her conservatorship will make headlines as soon as they happen.
